Children's Outreach Programs
Most people are not
familiar with donkeys. Their social nature and gentle demeanor contradict the
common stereotype that donkeys (and mules) are stubborn and mean. In addition
to their charming personalities, their small stature makes them an ideal
companion for children, especially those kids who are intimidated by the size
of most horses and ponies.
Children are
born quite ready to love other living beings and seem especially delighted by
the animal kingdom. Animals share with kids a curiosity about nature, an
innocence and unconditional love. They demand nothing more from us than a
little food, attention and kindness each day. They teach us many lessons in
our interactions, and we learn important things about life by watching
children and animals together. They remind us how to live, love create and
imagine within the natural world.
One of my favorite
poems is as follows:
Be kind to animals,
Be kind to trees,
Be kind to the earth
and everything upon it,
Be kind to children
and to one another,
...and God (whatever
you perceive him to be) will be kind to you.
And that's a Promise
We try to offer a variety of activities, through the use of our farm and animals to enhance the quality of life for children of all ages and abilities. Any child with a disability or chronic illness is welcome to visit our farm at no cost. We only ask for a detailed health history and medical release. If you feel your child could benefit further from this type of equine interaction, we will be happy to design a program for your child and schedule regular activity appointments to encourage growth, learning, balance and muscular strength. We belong to the North American Riding for the Handicapped and adhere to their prinicipals and standards regarding the use of equines in therapeutic programming.
In addition, for a
small fee per child, we welcome brownies/girl scouts/boy scouts, groups of
children from preschools and daycare providers, roots-n-shoots environmental
clubs, homeschoolers etc... for equine activities and instruction.
Occasionally, we allow supervised camping and/or hayrides to be scheduled in
the summer and fall months. Please contact us for more information and
pricing regarding these options.
